The plot follows Alex Cross, who investigates the kidnapping and murder of women by a criminal named Casanova. When one of the madman’s victims escapes, she teams up with Cross to track down and stop the crazed kidnapper.
Professional critics were not pleased with Gary Fleder’s film, as evidenced by its 34% “rotten” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The director’s work was described as an “awkward thriller” with no room for surprises.
Now, 27 years later, the film has found a second wind on streaming services and has received rave reviews, particularly from Russian viewers.

“It would seem incredible that David Fincher could not be surpassed with his ‘Seven.’ In fact, it couldn’t, but they have never shot it in such a way that it is still interesting to watch today,” shared one reviewer’s impression.
Thanks to its moderate box office success, the film spawned a sequel, “Along Came a Spider,” and the franchise was rebooted in 2012 starring Tyler Perry.
A television adaptation starring Aldis Hodge will be released this November, which has already been renewed for a second season.
