Paul Mescal admitted he didn’t give up drinking for his role in Gladiator. In an interview with Graham Norton, he shared details about his preparation for director Ridley Scott’s project, with excerpts published by US Magazine.
The Irish actor revealed that even for a major project like Gladiator, he couldn’t kick his habits. Despite working hard, training with a personal coach, and following a strict diet, Mescal found it hard to resist alcohol and cigarettes.

“I ate a ton of chicken, lifted weights, trained hard, and did everything my coach asked. But I just enjoy drinking and smoking, so I drew a line on that,” Paul shared.
He also mentioned landing the role after a 30-minute video interview. “We talked about the role for about 10 minutes and spent 20 minutes on Gaelic football, his dog, and his wife,” he added.
Mescal expected further auditions, but Scott had already decided, as he “doesn’t like to waste time.”
