Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian met on the sidelines of BRICS summit in Kazan to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation in various sectors, according to Vikram Misri, India’s First Deputy Foreign Minister.
“Prime Minister Modi and President Pezeshkian had a productive discussion. It was their first meeting since Pezeshkian’s election as ninth president of Islamic Republic of Iran. Prime Minister congratulated him on his recent victory and reaffirmed India’s commitment to deepening its long-standing ties with Iran. Both leaders emphasized shared historical and cultural connections that form the foundation of their bilateral relationship and explored ways to enhance cooperation in various fields,” Misri said during a briefing.

Misri noted that the leaders discussed Chabahar Port and North-South International Transport Corridor, which are crucial for boosting regional connectivity and economic partnership.
They also addressed Gaza Strip expressing concern about escalation of conflict, and spoke about Afghanistan, emphasizing importance of peace, stability and continued humanitarian aid to Afghan people.
“President Pezeshkian acknowledged India’s role in supporting Iran’s inclusion in both the SCO and BRICS, and both leaders agreed to continue their cooperation on various multilateral platforms, including BRICS and SCO,” Misri added.

Along with Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, new members like Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, UAE, and Saudi Arabia joined BRICS in 2024.
