Royal Family Prepared ‘Operation Reading Bridge’ for Kate Middleton’s Possible Passing

Princess of Wales Kate Middleton has reportedly entered remission after battling cancer diagnosed in 2024, but Buckingham Palace had prepared for the worst.

According to French newspaper Le Figaro, the royal family developed a confidential protocol named “Operation Reading Bridge” in case of her passing, with the title personally chosen by Prince William.

The plan, detailed in royal chronicler Bertrand Deckers’ upcoming book Kate: The Day When…, set for release on June 11, 2025, reflects the royal family’s cautious approach during Middleton’s illness.

The name “Reading Bridge” nods to Reading, the Berkshire town where Middleton was born, and its abbreviation, O.R.B., subtly references the orb, a royal symbol used in coronations. Deckers describes William’s choice as “almost a declaration of love,” highlighting its personal significance.

Middleton’s cancer diagnosis came to light in March 2024, following abdominal surgery in January that initially appeared non-cancerous. Subsequent tests revealed the disease, prompting a course of preventative chemotherapy.

By January 2025, Middleton announced her remission, expressing relief and gratitude to the Royal Marsden Hospital, where she received treatment. She has since resumed limited public duties, including meeting the Emir of Qatar and visiting cancer patients.

Such protocols are standard for senior royals. Similar plans exist for King Charles III (“Operation Menai Bridge”) and were used for Queen Elizabeth II (“Operation London Bridge”) and Prince Philip (“Operation Forth Bridge”). The revelation of “Operation Reading Bridge,” kept secret until now, underscores the gravity of Middleton’s health crisis and the royal family’s preparedness, even as she continues her recovery.
