Boris Pistorius has been named as the new German defense minister. He will succeed Christina Lambrecht who resigned on Monday following several controversies.
He has served for the last decade as the interior Minister for the western state of Lower Saxony and for more on this joining me now is DW Chief political correspondent Nina hazi here in Berlin Nina briefly.
Who is the new defense minister well the news just broke a couple of minutes ago and Boris Pistorius is somebody who is a well-known figure in Germany.
He has been around for a long time now he is currently the interior minister of Lower Saxony which is quite an influential State one of the 16 States here in Germany.
He has made himself known particularly for his heart stands when it comes to how to deal with refugees when they become criminals.
He actually sometimes strayed away from official party lines from the Social Democrats party lines when he asked for people to actually be sent back to countries when they were threatening to commit a crime.
So he is somebody who is confident I want to say with all of this and he comes from all our choices the Chancellor’s party the social democrats.
He also served in the military so this is somebody that all our children chose obviously for his qualifications but we all didn’t have him on our list of uh speculation now Nina what does this mean for the war in Ukraine and for the German support now ultimately means that the bundesphere is going to get somebody at their Helm who really understands the armed forces.
He is somebody who like I say has a certain degree of authority which is needed because the Bundesliga is undergoing massive transformation they do need a skilled manager they need somebody.
Who really is influential as well who knows other people in political Berlin for example and when it comes to all the decisions about supplying Ukraine with weapons none of that strategy is going to change because is going to be working very closely with all our shots and the chancellor has made it clear that all those decisions ultimately lie with him VW Chief political correspondent Nina haza there. thank you very much Nina
