During her sentencing hearing, Kristel Candelario expressed remorse, stating that both God and her deceased daughter had forgiven her. The judge, Brendan Sheehan, emphasized the severity of her actions, likening her lifetime imprisonment to the imprisonment her daughter endured without food or care.

Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael O'Malley condemned Candelario's actions, labeling her neglect as a new low in parental responsibility. The prosecutor's office reported that Candelario left her daughter unattended from June 6th to June 16th, resulting in the child's death from dehydration.

Upon returning home, Candelario found her daughter unresponsive and alerted the authorities. An revealed the appalling conditions in which the child was found, alone in a playpen surrounded by filth.

In February, Candelario pleaded guilty to charges of aggravated murder and endangering children. She cited struggles with depression and related issues, expressing daily prayers for forgiveness.
