Mariah Carey feels overlooked. Despite her incredible success, with 19 number-one hits worldwide—more than any other solo artist—she has won only five Grammys, two of them in her first year.
In a rare comment on the podcast Las Culturistas, Carey said, “They tricked me. They played me.”

Back in 1990, Mariah was nominated for five Grammys and won two: Best Pop Vocal Performance for “Vision of Love” and Best New Artist.
However, throughout the ’90s, despite releasing 11 No. 1 hits and timeless classics, she didn’t win any more awards.
In 1996, she received six nominations for her album Fantasy but lost every category. Her 1997 album Butterfly, which she considers her best, also came up empty.

In 2006, after a major comeback, Mariah received eight Grammy nominations but took home only three.
Since then, the Grammys have mostly ignored her, with her last nomination in 2009 for Best Gospel Performance. Even her audiobook memoir, The Meaning of Mariah, didn’t earn a Spoken Word nomination.
