British singer Liam Payne has died after falling from a hotel balcony in Argentina. Police confirmed on Wednesday, Oct. 16, that the 31-year-old singer fell from the balcony of the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires, leading to his death.

Exact cause of the fall remains unclear but police have confirmed that an investigation is underway. Authorities have also stated that an autopsy will be conducted and further details will be shared afterward.
In a statement translated from Spanish, Alberto Crescenti, head of Buenos Aires’ public emergency medical service (SAME), told TN that Payne fell into the hotel’s internal courtyard.
A SAME team arrived at the scene around 5:11 p.m. local time and confirmed the singer’s death. Crescenti added that Payne’s injuries were so severe that there “was no possibility of resuscitation.”
