Japanese supplement pill has been banned: Two people died

Two people died and more than 106 people were hospitalized due to the supplement pill. Because of this, the pill has been ordered to be taken off store shelves in .

The pill, produced by Kobayashi Pharmaceutical Co., helps lower cholesterol, and contains an ingredient called “benicoji,” a red species of mold.

In addition to Osaka-based Kobayashi's products launched last week, more than 40 other companies contain benicoji, including miso paste, crackers and a vinegar dressing, a government health ministry official said Wednesday.

Many are believed to be ill, although it is not clear if all illnesses are directly linked to benikoji.
