Today, it was announced that Maggie Smith has passed away at the age of 89. The Daily Mail published her final photos, taken last fall.
The iconic actress posed for Spanish brand Loewe, starring in their pre-spring/summer 2024 collection campaign. The shoot was conducted by German photographer Juergen Teller.
Loewe’s creative director, Jonathan Anderson, remarked, “I’m incredibly proud that Juergen Teller captured Maggie Smith.”
The King and Queen said: “As the curtain comes down on a national treasure, we join all those around the world in remembering with the fondest admiration and affection her many great performances, and her warmth and wit that shone through both off and on the stage.”
In the campaign, Maggie appeared in three different looks: a black-and-white dress paired with a burgundy bag, a green-brown fur coat with an asymmetrical deep green handbag, and a blue silk dress matched with a sandy-colored bag.
Brandreth shared a photo X account and wrote: “The saddest news: the death of Dame Maggie Smith marks the end of a golden era & a quite extraordinary life. She was a truly great actress, ‘one of the greats’ & simply the best company: wise, witty, waspish, wonderful. One of a kind in every way and consequently irreplaceable.”
Maggie’s last public appearance was at the Wimbledon women’s final, where Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur faced Czech player Markéta Vondroušová (Vondroušová won).
Although it’s unclear whom Maggie was supporting, the photos showed her fully engaged in the match, looking happy and content.
Maggie Smith’s career was adorned with two Oscars, seven BAFTA awards, three Golden Globes, three Emmys, one Tony Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award.
In 1989, she was named a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire, and 1994 she was inducted into the U.S. Theater Hall of Fame.
