Democrats could unseat two incumbent Republicans holding precariously blue-state districts.

Former state lawmaker Rudy Salas is taking on GOP Rep. David Valdao. He has raised more than $1.3 million so far, his campaign said.

After holding off fellow Democrat Melissa Hurtado in the March 5 primary, finished the quarter with $750,000 in the bank.

Adam Gray, a former legislator, has received over $1 million in donations and has a similar amount on hand for his match-up with GOP Rep. John Duarte.

Salas' primary caused concern within his party, but now that he has secured a ticket to the general election, he believes the early competition helped garner attention for the race.

Salas received support from influential figures such as Gov. Gavin Newsom and Rep. Pete Aguilar, who both aided in fundraising and campaigning efforts.

Democrats are hopeful that the absence of former GOP Rep. Kevin McCarthy, who protected targeted Central Valley Republicans, could provide an opportunity for them in McCarthy's home turf. Aguilar, when asked about Democrats' strong showing in McCarthy territory, mostly demurred.

“Republicans have turned the page on their leadership team,” Aguilar said. They probably now have a House speaker who doesn't know where the Central Valley is,” before insisting his team focused more on the issues than the personalities involved.

“Our focus is — what are we going to do to lower prescription drug prices? Those are the things that Democrats care about,” he said.

“A million dollars goes a lot further here than it does in Orange County and LA,” Gray said. “It's really going to put in a position to run a competitive general election.”
