The incident was reported to the Baltimore Police Department at 1:35 a.m. The bridge, also known as the Key Bridge, carries Interstate 695 over the Patapsco River.

Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski, Jr. is coordinating with local officials and emergency services. The Maryland Transport Authority confirmed the closure of I-695 due to the caused by a “ship strike.”

The bridge, built in 1977, is over 8,500 feet long and was one of the longest continuous truss bridges in the world at the time of completion. is seeking further details from the Coast Guard and other emergency response agencies.
