The 39-year-old pop icon, performing in Brazil for the first time since 2012 captivated the massive crowd with hits like Poker Face and Born This Way unaware of the threat until the following day.

Dubbed “Operation Fake Monster,” police operation uncovered a group orchestrating the attack. Aiming to detonate improvised explosives and Molotov cocktails to gain social media notoriety. Rio de Janeiro’s Civil Police, acting on intelligence from digital platforms identified the group. Which promoted hate speech against the LGBTQ+ community and radicalized teenagers.

The alleged leader, arrested in Rio Grande do Sul for illegal firearm possession, claimed Lady Gaga was a “Satanist.” A teenager in Rio was detained for storing child pornography. A third suspect, charged with terrorism, allegedly planned a “Satanist ritual” involving child murder during the concert.

Authorities executed 15 search warrants across Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Mato Grosso. And Rio Grande do Sul seizing electronic devices but finding no explosives. U.S. Consulate aided the investigation with threat alerts. Police kept the plot secret to avoid panic ensuring the concert proceeded with 5,000 security personnel, drones and facial recognition technology.

Lady Gaga’s team learned of the threat via media reports on Sunday. “No safety concerns were known prior to or during the show,” a spokesperson said, emphasizing coordination with law enforcement. Gaga, promoting her seventh album Mayhem, expressed gratitude on Instagram for the “vibrant” Brazilian crowd, unaware of the averted danger.

The concert, funded by Rio’s city government to boost tourism, attracted 500,000 tourists and generated an estimated $100 million. Fans including Colombians and Brazilians who traveled cross-country, hailed Gaga’s performance as a celebration of freedom and queer joy, despite the group’s hateful motives.
