Manchester, June 2, 2025 – Sam Gardiner, a beloved contestant from the 2020 series of BBC’s Race Across the World, tragically passed away at 24 following a car accident in Manchester, England.

Greater Manchester Police confirmed that on May 26, Gardiner was driving alone in a white Volkswagen Golf R estate on the A34 in Gatley when his vehicle veered off the road, rolled, and landed on its side. He was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries but succumbed to them on Thursday, May 29.
Gardiner’s parents, Jo and Andrew, expressed their heartbreak in a statement: “Sam left us far too soon. Words will never fully capture the light, joy, and energy he brought into our lives. As a son, brother, and nephew, he was loyal, funny, and fiercely protective.” They noted that his Race Across the World experience, where he competed alongside his mother Jo, opened his eyes to adventure and travel, touching everyone he met.
Sam, a landscape gardener working on Scotland’s west coast, was in Stockport for a family birthday celebration. His family has requested privacy during this difficult time, supported by specially trained officers.
A Race Across the World spokesperson shared: “We are deeply saddened by Sam’s passing. His energy and bond with Jo during their journey from Mexico to Argentina captivated audiences. Our condolences go to his parents, Andrew and Jo, brothers William and Charlie, stepmother Justine, and loved ones.”
