Alex Murdaugh has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for various crimes

Killer Alex Murdaugh was sentenced on Monday. In federal court, where a judge convicted him of multiple financial crimes, including nearly two dozen counts of conspiracy, fraud, and money laundering. For this crime, he was sentenced to 40 years in prison.

The federal sentence also includes that Murdoch must pay more than $8.7 million in restitution to his victims. Already serving a 27-year sentence following his guilty plea in state court for similar misconduct.

Prosecutors say both cases stem from multiple schemes in which a disbarred attorney defrauded his personal injury clients and law firms out of millions of dollars.

The sentences are in addition to two consecutive life sentences without parole that Murduff, 55, received for the murders of his wife Maggie, and 22-year-old son Paul a year earlier.

“I understand,” he said, “the natural reaction to what I just said is probably, ‘Is he sorry for what he did, or is he sorry that he got caught?” … But I assure you and every victim that I hurt that I am sorry for the things I did.”
